Southend United lost 4-2 at home to Barrow AFC in a National League match on Saturday. The defeat sees them remain second in the table but their lead over the chasing pack is now reduced.
Keaton Ward was the standout performer for Barrow, scoring once and setting up three goals. Loan signing Mikey Lane marked his debut with two goals for the visitors.
Southend manager Kieron Dyer made three changes to his starting lineup. Barrow's Dan Mooney, who impressed as a substitute the previous week, pushed for a start.
Barrow supporter Chris Altree outlined his club's challenging start. "We've had a mixed start to the season as we adjust back to the level with a new management team and new squad," he said. "In August we didn't win any games but September has seen some improvement with two home wins and an away point in Worthing."
Southend, who had won three of their last five games, fell behind in the 52nd minute. Ronan Harper put Barrow ahead before Sam Thompson doubled the lead. Ronan Colclough pulled one back from the penalty spot with fifteen minutes left, but an own goal restored Barrow's two-goal cushion. Lamar Chambers-Parillon scored a late consolation for Southend in stoppage time.
The result leaves Southend second in the National League on 20 points from nine games. They are three points behind leaders Boreham Wood.
