Southend United scored six goals in a first half for the first time in their 120-year history on Saturday. The 6-1 demolition of Gateshead at the International Stadium was powered by a Sam Austin hat-trick and a Harry Cardwell brace.
Austin led the rout, completing his treble just before half-time. Kyle McAdam also scored, while David Eguaibor netted a late consolation for the hosts. The Shrimpers were unbelievably clinical, converting six of their seven first-half shots according to the defeated Gateshead manager. This victory extends Southend's recent form to four wins and a draw in their last five matches, a run that has propelled them to second in the National League with 20 points from nine games. They now sit just three points behind leaders Boreham Wood, with a chance to close that gap further when they host Hartlepool United next Saturday.
Cattermole's difficult night
Lee Cattermole, the Gateshead boss, faced a hostile atmosphere from his own supporters even before kick-off. He described the heavy defeat as an unacceptable result in very difficult circumstances for his players. "It's an unacceptable result but very, very difficult circumstances for the players for obvious reasons," Cattermole said. He acknowledged Southend's strength and finishing, stating that once his side went a goal down, the game became extremely difficult against a clinical opponent. The Gateshead manager noted that Southend's goals came in a devastating 32-minute spell, with the visitors finding the net in the 13th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, 41st, and 45th minutes of the first half.

Southend United will be without two key players for their next three fixtures after Joe Duncan and Dan Cox received international call-ups, the club's fan panel confirmed on September 27. The Shrimpers, who are second in the National League with 20 points from 10 games, lost 4-2 at home to Barrow on Saturday. They now face Eastleigh away on September 30 without the pair. "We’ll be without two important players for the next three games," said fan panellist Garry Smith.
