Southend United have signed defender Ryan Battrum on a one-month loan from West Ham United. The 21-year-old arrives at Roots Hall to bolster Kieron Dyer's defensive options as the club sits fifth in the National League table with 14 points from seven games.

West Ham United confirmed the loan move, stating the young defender had joined the National League side. "Everyone at West Ham United wishes Ryan the very best for his loan spell with Southend," the Premier League club said.

Battrum is a product of the West Ham academy, having signed for the club at the age of six. He was a key member of the under-18s side that won the Premier League South and FA Youth Cup double in the 2022/23 season before signing his first professional contract. He has made over 60 appearances for West Ham's under-21s, including three this term against Worthing, Southampton and Chelsea in Premier League 2. He also featured for the first team in pre-season, playing in a 1-1 draw at Southend and a 5-0 win over Stevenage. The defender gained senior experience with a short loan at National League side Braintree Town in March and April 2026, making eight appearances and scoring one goal.

Manager Kieron Dyer, a former West Ham midfielder, continues to shape his squad, having already brought in Academy of Football starlet Rayan Oyebade on a season-long loan in July. The addition of Battrum provides further competition at the back for a side whose recent form reads two wins, two draws and one defeat from their last five matches. Their latest result was a 2-2 draw at Carlisle on Saturday, where late goals from L. Chambers-Parillon and K. McAdam secured a point.

Battrum could make his debut for Southend in Tuesday night's home match against Tamworth at Roots Hall. Fans can view the full upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures page and check the latest standings as the team aims to close the three-point gap to leaders Boreham Wood.
