Southend United were held to a 1-1 draw away at Woking in the National League on Bank Holiday Monday. Aiden O'Brien's 61st-minute equaliser cancelled out Harry Cardwell's first-half penalty, ensuring the points were shared at Laithwaite Community Stadium in front of 3,583 spectators.

This result came as Southend, the current FA Trophy holders, were sitting third in the table. The club finished sixth in the final 2025 National League standings, accumulating 81 points from 46 games with a record of 23 wins, 12 draws and 11 losses. Their recent form was WLWWD and they scored 83 goals while conceding 47 last season, ending 27 points behind champions York.

The opening period saw Southend, managed by Kieron Dyer, force a wave of early corners. Clear chances were limited in the first twenty minutes. The breakthrough came in the 38th minute when winger Lewys Twamley caught Anthony Georgiou in possession. The move led to Josh Popoola being adjudged to have been fouled in the Woking box. Harry Cardwell stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty to give the visitors the lead.

Southend pushed for a second goal before the interval. Cardwell had a one-on-one effort saved by Woking goalkeeper Will Jaasklainen, and Ben Goodliffe headed a chance wide from close range. The home side, who had lost 1-0 to Hornchurch the previous Friday, made a triple substitution at half-time in search of a response.

Woking started the second period on the front foot after their tactical changes. Their pressure told in the 61st minute when substitute Aiden O'Brien found the net to level the scores. Southend sought to regain their advantage. Oli Coker blasted a rebound over the bar, and Steven Turner saw an overhead kick saved by Joe Duncan in the Southend goal.

At the other end, Woking created several opportunities to win it. Roy Syla failed to convert a goalmouth scramble, while Matt Ward and Liam Dulson both had efforts saved by Duncan. Jake Forster-Caskey, another half-time introduction, attempted a half-volley that went wide and later saw an 88th-minute free-kick saved. Matt Ward also curled a chance wide in the second half as the game opened up.

The draw means Southend United drop two points on the road. Fixtures between these two sides were evenly matched last season, and this contest followed a similar pattern with neither team able to score during stoppage time.

Kieron Dyer's side will look to bounce back in their next fixture. The full schedule is available on our fixtures page. The team's defensive record from last season, conceding 47 goals, was tested again at Woking. Joe Duncan made several important saves to preserve a point for the visitors.

For Southend, Harry Cardwell's penalty conversion provided the lead and demonstrated his reliability from the spot. Goalkeeper Joe Duncan was busy, making saves from Turner's overhead kick and from efforts by Ward, Dulson, and Forster-Caskey. Lewys Twamley's pressing led to the penalty incident.

Woking's match-winner was Aiden O'Brien, who came off the bench at half-time and made the decisive impact with his 61st-minute strike. Will Jaasklainen in the Woking goal made a key save from Cardwell's one-on-one chance before the break. The home side's starting lineup included Jaaskalainen, Odusina, Okoli, Ogie, Asare, Syla, Timmy Akinola, Turner, Georgiou, Ward, and Dulson, with Aiden O'Brien, Jake Forster-Caskey, and Tunji Akinola all introduced at the interval.
