Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley has identified the weekend's trip to face Southend United as a major test following his team's perfect start to the National League season. Rowley's side maintained their unbeaten opening with six points from two matches over the August Bank Holiday weekend, setting up a clash with one of the division's promotion favourites.

Speaking in a report published by Gloverscast, Rowley said the fixture at Roots Hall is one that motivates his players. "I said to the lads after training this is one of the games which motivates you so much," the Yeovil boss stated. Southend, managed by former Newcastle United winger Kieron Dyer, are aiming for an immediate return to the Football League after finishing sixth last season with 81 points from 46 games.

Yeovil Town's strong opening to the campaign was built on a pair of hard-fought victories. They secured a win against Barrow last Friday before edging past Tamworth at home on Monday. This six-point return keeps them among the early pacesetters and builds confidence ahead of a difficult away trip.

The Glovers ended the 2025 season with a positive goal difference of +36, having scored 83 times and conceded 47. That defensive solidity will be required against a Southend side that Rowley believes plays an attractive brand of football. The Yeovil manager specifically noted the tactical shift under Dyer, describing a possession-based approach utilising wingers.

Southend United's start to the new campaign has been mixed, providing a fascinating contrast to Yeovil's consistency. They suffered a surprising 3-1 home defeat to newly-promoted Kidderminster Harriers on Friday night before bouncing back with a 1-1 draw at Woking on Monday. Despite this, their status as a favourite for promotion remains intact, built on a squad that finished just 27 points behind champions York in the final 2025 table.

Rowley analysed the threat they pose. "They are more possession-based, they play with wingers now and they are really exciting to watch," he said. The Shrimpers have also strengthened their attacking options this week with the signing of striker Promise Omochere from Bristol Rovers. The 25-year-old forward will be available for selection against Yeovil, adding another dimension to their frontline.

While preparing for the Southend test, Yeovil are also managing the recovery of summer signing Joe Haigh. The midfielder, who joined from Dagenham & Redbridge, underwent ankle surgery during the summer and is progressing through his rehabilitation. He was due to see a specialist on the day of the Gloverscast report, with the club estimating he is roughly three or four weeks away from full contact training. Haigh is expected to begin ball work again soon, but his absence means others must step up in the engine room. The latest squad news is always available on our injuries page.

The match at Roots Hall represents a significant early marker for both clubs' ambitions. For Yeovil, it is a chance to prove their strong start is built on substance against a fancied opponent. For Southend, it is an opportunity to find consistency and use their home advantage at what Rowley called an "incredible stadium". The outcome could provide an early indication of the National League's competitive landscape this season. Yeovil Town's next fixture is the trip to face Southend United this weekend.
