Southend United will pay tribute to former striker James Walker with a minute's applause before their upcoming National League game. The club stated the gesture will take place at Roots Hall prior to the Saturday fixture versus AFC Fylde after Walker's passing.
The club expressed sadness at the loss of the forward, who played for them for two seasons, making over fifty appearances and scoring several goals. Walker, who came through Charlton Athletic's youth system, signed for Southend when Steve Tilson was manager. His career later included spells at several other clubs before he moved to non-league football in Essex.
Steve Tilson, the manager who signed Walker, shared warm memories. "James was a great lad," Tilson stated. "He was a really bubbly character in the dressing room and he got on well with everyone."
Walker experienced a serious cardiac arrest several years ago, resulting in lasting health challenges. Last year, a benefit game was arranged by the club's former players' group to aid him, featuring a team led by Tilson and another former player. Walker was also capped by the Antigua & Barbuda national team in a World Cup qualifying match.
The planned tribute occurs as Southend, who are near the top of the league table, get ready for a packed schedule. Their most recent match against AFC Fylde ended in a win. The applause is scheduled for just before the game starts on Saturday at their home ground.
