Southend United head coach Kieron Dyer said the club is looking to strengthen its squad depth. He revealed plans to add a new forward and to address gaps in the full‑back positions.

Forward and Full‑Back Focus

Dyer confirmed that the Shrimpers are targeting a new striker to bolster attacking options. When asked about defensive depth, he acknowledged that the team appears to have only one right‑back and one left‑back.

Flexible Role Usage

According to Dyer, Dan Cox can play at left‑back but also slot into a three‑man defence as a left‑sided centre‑half once the team settles into comfortable possession. The same flexibility applies to Harry Taylor, who can operate at right‑back and then shift into a right‑sided centre‑half when the formation changes.

Current Strengths

The coach highlighted that the centre‑midfield area is solid, with players DJ, Harts, Cokes and Tommy providing stability. He also noted that centre‑halves were strong, but other positions remain targets for improvement.

No Centre‑Midfield Additions

Dyer made it clear that the club is not looking to strengthen the centre‑midfield line, as the current quartet is satisfactory.

Broad Recruitment Strategy

"We’re looking at all areas to strengthen really," Dyer said. "The only area we aren’t looking is in centre‑midfield because we’re happy with the four we’ve got."
