Southend United have signed midfielder Lewys Twamley to boost their attacking options. The 22-year-old joins after catching the eye with his performances in South Wales.

What happened?

Twamley began his career in Newport County's academy and represented Wales at Under-19 level. He first linked up with Merthyr Town in 2023 and quickly made his mark.

Why it matters for Southend

A blistering return of 15 goals in just 21 games at the start of the Martyrs' title-winning 2024/25 season earned him a move to National League side Yeovil Town. However, he returned to Merthyr midway through the campaign and helped the club carry their momentum into National League North.

What comes next?

Across his time with the Martyrs, Twamley scored 39 goals in 109 appearances, underlining his consistency and attacking threat from midfield. He now becomes Kieron Dyer's fifth signing of the summer as the Shrimpers gear up for the new season. As of the end of the 2025/26 season, Southend United stood 6th in the National League, with 81 points from 46 games, and a recent form of WLWWD. Their last result was a 0-0 draw against Wealdstone on 2026-05-17. | Category | Stat | | --- | --- | | League standing | 6th | | Points | 81 | | Recent form | WLWWD | Kieron Dyer said: "Lewys had a remarkable season last year. For any player to have over 30 goal involvements in one season is truly incredible.
