Southend United boss Kieron Dyer has named Oli Coker as the club’s new captain ahead of their National League opener against Altrincham. The 23-year-old midfielder, who came through the youth ranks at Roots Hall, will lead the Shrimpers into action tomorrow, with Dyer praising his leadership qualities and work ethic.

Dyer explained that Coker’s hardworking nature and deep connection to the club made him the perfect choice. "He’s a leader in that aspect of how hardworking he is," said Dyer. "He’s a local lad who knows what the badge means, so it just made perfect sense for me." The decision was well-received by the squad, with Coker earning applause from his teammates when the announcement was made.
How did Coker prove himself to Dyer?
Despite initial concerns about competition from new signings Anthony Hartigan and DJ Oldaker, Coker quickly impressed Dyer with his performance in training and matches. "From the first day in training, I remember looking at Ads (Adem Atay) and saying, ‘Wow, we’ve got some player here,’" said Dyer. "His data is the highest in every training session and matchday game. No one covers the distance of him."

Their next fixture is at home against Eastleigh on February 16, 2027, with the team currently sitting 13th in the table.
